Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Condition when the tendon that connects the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel bone (calcaneus) becomes irritated

  • Signs / symptoms:

    • Pain, ankle stiffness, difficulty pointing the foot

  • Usually stems from overuse but can come on rapidly if you are not warmed up or haven’t built up your tissue to handle a high volume of jumping, sprinting or running uphill.

  • When the Achilles is in a weakened state → more likely to rupture

    • Full or partial tear may require surgery (usually fill hear a pop if a rupture occurs)

  • Fun fact:

    • The Achilles tendon is the strongest and thickest tendon in the body yet the most commonly ruptured.

  • Aggravating factors: walking, running, sprinting, jumping, climbing stairs and any activity that involves lifting and lowering the heel
