Iliopsoas → Hip flexor and external rotator of the hip
Caused by microtrauma to the tendon due to overuse
Acute trauma: avulsion fracture of the lesser trochanter
Due to eccentric contraction of hip flexors or quick flexion from excessive extensor force
Overuse: from any activity that requires repetitive flexion in external rotation position
Typical activities associated: ballet, cycling, rowing, running, track and field, soccer and gymnastics
“Dancer or jumper’s hip”
Adolescents during growth spurs have decreased flexibility of the hip flexors → higher risk
More prevalent in females
Posture observation:
Pelvis anteriorly rotated with lumbar lordosis, shortened stride length (increased knee flexion on affected side)
Signs/Symptoms:
Pain with resisted hip flexion and hip extension may be limited or cause pain
