Overuse injury typically occurring in young baseball pitches resulting in epiphysiolysis of proximal humerus (fracture of growth plate)
X-Ray: showing a widened proximal humerus physis (growth plate) in comparison to contralateral shoulder
Risk for labral tear - possible MRI findings
Males > females, typical ages: 11-16
Signs/Symptoms:
Decreased pitch velocity/accuracy, pain with throwing, pain is worse in late cocking and deceleration phases
Late cocking phase: shoulder is maximally externally rotated causing extreme stress on the growth plate
Deceleration phase: Rotator cuff is contracting eccentrically pulling on physis (growth plate)/ opposing forces placed on shoulder
