Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD)

  • OCD: separation of area of cartilage in the joints usually at elbow and knee joints

  • Could be due to lack of blood supply in the joint because of overactivity

  • Can also be a genetic reasoning why this occurs

  • Typically diagnosed using X-Rays and MRI 

  • Small lesion: non operative treatment ⇒ physical therapy 

  • Large lesion: “loose body” meaning a fragment of cartilage in the joint space → surgery will be considered

  •  Signs/symptoms:

    • Knee pain that gets worse with activity

    • Feeling like the knee is going to “Give out”

    • Decreased flexibility 

    • Locking and catching feeling
