Snapping Hip Syndrome

  • Also known as Coxa salton

  • Audible click in the hip when the hip is in motion. 

  • Typically overuse injury that involves repetitive hip flexion and extension (dance, soccer, gymnastics & running)

  • Causes:

    • External: (most common) ITB snapping over greater trochanter of femur

      • Pain over greater trochanter

    • Internal: Iliopsoas tendon snapping over bony prominence of pelvis

      • Anterior hip pain 

    • Intra-articular (less common): traumatic event

      • Possible torn labrum 

  • Signs/Symptoms:

    • Weakness in hip flexors and extensors

    • Pain located in the front of the hip
