Tennis Elbow

  • Also known as lateral epicondylalgia → irritations of tendon of extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle that attaches to the outside of the elbow

  • Due to overuse of finger and wrist extensors with grip intensive activities such as gardening, typing, cooking and tennis

  • Occurs during tennis when you follow through with the racquet, controlling the wrist and slowing it down.

    • Wrist extensors are slowing the wrist as it bends putting tension on the upper forearm tendons

    • Occurs when the tension is used with high force or at high volume or from repetitive overuse if the finger extensors are constantly opening the hand

  • Signs/symptoms:

    • Pain along the outside of the elbow that increases with finger and wrist extension (bending wrist toward arm)

    • Dull/achy, may be sharp

    • Weakness in hand and forearm

    • Typing on a keyboard or opening, closing or squeezing hands
